Gates of Hell? - Rick Beneteau
The
banks are doin' it!
The automakers are doin' it!
Exxon and Mobil Oil just did it!
Is the Net next?
In
the beginning Bill begat Microsoft. Then the Pentagon begat the Internet.
And behind those not-so-pearly Gates of the new cyber-paradise, a plot
rivaling that of the biblical serpent was uncoiling.
Through bespeckled eyes, Bill envisioned an MS software-dominated
world through strategic branding on the Web. He started the process
pre-Internet by taking a big bite out of Apple and never looked back. Now,
almost every computer sold in the world contains his operating system and
most netizens view the Internet through his browsers.
Along
comes America Online and starts signing a lot up the Internet-hungry
population. Then, AOL swallows Compuserve and in it's biggest coup, pays
287 million dollars this year to acquire the Israeli-based Mirabilis
Ltd.(ICQ - my all-time favorite little "chat" program). I get
the cold sweats just thinking about the power!
Then,
my absolute favorite browser company Netscape begins "chatting"
with my least favorite browser company (the aforementioned AOL) and well,
Gates has gotta be shakin' in his brown penny loafers. My ex-hero, who now
can't hold a candle to real men in a court of law, finally has some
competition to contend with.
Lo
and behold, the era of the Cyber-Giant Mergers is upon us.
Upside
has it that gone might be the days of MS putting their software stamp all
over the products they have cloned over the years from truly talented
designers (when did MS ever have a clever idea of their own?).
Downside
is obvious. The Internet is quickly becoming a mirror of corporatedom with
mergers, take-overs and various "strategic alliances" and we
stand to lose the personality of the Web as we know it.
The
Internet is developing very nicely on it's own, thank you very much! We
don't need the wisdom of Wall Street Wonders invading the last real
frontier we humans have. Our world is infected enough with the poison of
too-powerful corporations. Need I mention global environmental
destruction, mass starvation and wars with so many maniacal hands now on
the nuclear knob?
I
believe in freedom and the spirit of entrepreneurialship but hey look, we
can't even go out to get a sun tan anymore thanks to greed and abuse of
the giants of the world.
Corporate
Godzillaship on the Internet will just be opening the Gates of Hell!
