State-of-the-CyberUnion - Early '99 - Rick Beneteau
- There are NO RULES on the Internet. It's the new frontier and WWW stands for Wild Wild
Web. It's the Cyber-Land of the Free and the Domain of the Brave all right. "Free" is what
sells and only the Brave-of-the-Brave entrepreneurs have figured out how to capitalize on
the concept of Free.
- There are NO EXPERTS yet on the Net. Quash the notion that there are "guru's" out
there. There are just those of us who have paid our dues, invested time, spent money,
consumed cartons of aspirin, and survived setbacks growing a little wider/wiser learning
mostly what not to do.
- Search Engines are NOT the end-all-and-be-all of Internet promotion. As a matter of
fact, they continue to slip down the proverbial pole of importance as if their spidery limbs
were greased with fresh Vaseline. The impressive growth of my company occurred without a
single search engine placement (no, I'm not recommending you don't do it, just keep it in
the proper perspective-I'm IN the engines now).
- There are more "timesuckers" (people who thrive on wasting your time) per capita on the
Web than in the Real World. Yards more "Yes" people (you know the type), scores more scam
artists, droves more dreamers and virtual tons more self-anointed experts just waiting to
sell you what they themselves know they have not figured out. And if they did have the
definitive battleplan, then why would they sell that precious-as-plutonium information - it
would only create their own myriad of competition. And how smart a marketing move would that
be?
- SEX STILL SELLS more than anything on the Internet. The most popular keywords remain
verbiage I couldn't and wouldn't mention here or anywhere else in print. If there are any
master marketers, it's the porn purveyors and it is they who should be selling how-to books
on conquering cyberspace. I almost couldn't bare to keep abreast of this sickening trend:)
- People are still falling all over themselves to lose their money and dreams and fail on
dream-quenching send-my-check-to-the-beach-house MLM's. There are however, some very
impressive network marketing companies that have surfaced in 1998 and will offer netizens
viable business opportunities this year.
- Microsoft will FINALLY face some real competition. Yahoo!! Oops, I mean the marriages
involving AOL/ICQ/Netscape, Excite/@Home etc. Sadly, Billy has fallen at the same pace as
the search engines down my most-admired list.
- The Can-the-Spam Drive motors on at the speed of light. The Pro-UCE crusade has
resorted to criminally mean tactics as the ultimate irony rings clearer than ever: NOTHING
CREDIBLE COMES BY WAY OF SPAM. A sad result, the dial-ups of innocents are being terminated
by over-zealous ISP's at the mere whisper of the gelled meat now. I know, I was a victim in
98 because some god-of-the-Web threw the switch on me over a misguided newsletter
subscriber.
- "The List" is the Real Estate of the Internet. ListBuilding, if not already, should be
your numero-uno priority if you are an Internet marketer. If you're really coy, you'll sell
something unique along the way to earn your ISP expenses, but the quicker you build a
bonafide list, the sooner your cyber-retirement will come. A quick look at Internet Company
stock prices and some of the incredible dollars fetched for "free" services that never
earned a nickel is testament to the monetary value placed on The List. Build It and They
Will Come to Buy You Out.
- '99 will be Fine. And interesting!
